Grand River Brewing is pleased to announce that it won a Gold Medal at the 2009 Ontario Brewing Awards for its Galt Knife Old Style. The Awards were presented at the Bier Markt on the Esplanade in Toronto on Tuesday April 14 2009. The brewery also received two people’s choice awards for its new Curmudgeon IPA in the specialty division and the Galt Knife Old Style.
This lager was named after the brewery’s beautiful building that once was the home of the Galt Knife Company. This deep gold lager is brewed in the style reminiscent of pre-prohibition beers that were brewed with full bodied malts and shows a distinct character in the finish. The pale malt forward beer presents a full bodied creamy taste at the beginning and finish with a complex and enjoyable hop bite.
Grand River Brewing has selected Jump Courier to provide direct home deliveries in the Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge area for a 90 day test period starting in February 2009.
Jump Courier drivers will deliver cases (12 bottles) directly to the consumer at their home or work address between 6 and 8pm Monday to Friday and during the day on Saturdays. The drivers will call ahead to ensure that someone will be home as AGCO regulations require a signature by someone age 19 and older on the shipping documents. The delivery cost will be $9.95 plus taxes.
Presently Grand River Brewing is concentrating on four brands year round. It is the goal of the brewer to also offer 4 seasonal beers every year that will be constantly changing. The current plans are to issue these specialty beers for Thanksgiving, Christmas, St Patrick’s Day and Canada Day – July 1st.
Many people have asked why we decided to go with the Growler as our initial package.
The growler has proven itself to be a very popular package at many of the micro-breweries stateside. Because of the different laws governing the sale of alcohol in many of these jurisdictions, many people keep their own particular growler and return it to their local brewery, where they can refill it from a selection of taps right in the retail store. We have to handle this slightly differently, so we therefore charge a $5.00 deposit, which is refundable on return, but we assure that each growler returned is cleaned, sanitized and filled with fresh product on an automatic filler. By doing it this way, we can be sure of consistent fills with no chance of contamination. The packaging is then completed with a new twist cap and a shrink wrap.
We believe the greatest advantage of using the growler, though, is what we call our “Green Initiative.” As already stated, the returned bottles are cleaned, sanitized and refilled. They are glass, making many, many cycles possible. The volume of approx. 2 litres is almost identical to a six pack of commercial beer, but, we are only using one bottle as opposed to six individual bottles, six labels, six caps plus a box to tie it all together. Also, because we charge a $5.00 deposit per Growler, they don’t tend to end up along the shoulders and in the ditches beside roadways. So, do your part to make a "Greener World".
